Up for sale, a 1950's Kay K27 Jumbo X-braced acoustic guitar in excellent condition and in perfect working order. This'50s Jumbo flattop model has received all the maintenance due a guitar of this vintage, with a fresh neck reset, a carved bone saddle, and a fret dress of the original jumbo brass fretwire.

Given that most vintage Kay acoustics need the aforementioned service to be optimally playable, very few are offered for sale in this premium condition, especially given the prohibitive cost for a restoration of this nature. The tonewood complement includes a solid spruce top, maple back and sides, and a maple neck with an ebony fretboard. This Kay weighs 5lbs 10oz, professionally setup here at Mike and Mikes Guitar Bar with fresh 12-53 strings. The K27 features a 17 lower bout width and a 4 1/2 body depth, and the sheer size of this X-braced Jumbo ensures bold, shimmering sound with a certain punchy quality that's not boxy or too focused in its response. The percussive cut and upper midrange snap of the spruce and maple tonewood combination is central to the guitars sonic profile, and notes retain plenty of body and a smooth, even response as you travel up the ebony fingerboard.

The maple neck has a deep U-shaped neck profile carve measuring 1.015" deep at the 1st fret and 1.160" at the 9th. The bound ebony fretboard features block pearloid inlays, and the original jumbo brass fretwire has plenty of meat, freshly leveled and crowned, playing cleanly up the neck with 14 frets clear of the body. The scale length is a full 25 3/4, and the resulting string tension offers a significant increase in volume over shorter scale acoustics.

The nut is a new hand-carved piece of bone measuring 1 3/4 in width, and the headstock retains the original open-back nickel Grover tuning machines with butterbean buttons. Even the original Kay "Kanti-Lever" waterslide decal is intact, toting their proprietary adjustable truss rod design. The top is framed by multi-ply binding both on the soundhole and parameter, and the original screw-on white teardrop pickguard is intact. The ebony bridge sits flush with a top, complete with a new carved bone saddle, and string spacing at the bridge is 2 1/8.

A bold "K27" model stamp is visible through the soundhole. Very well-kept and crack-free, the nitro lacquer finish is a natural ambered gloss on top with saturated three-tone Sunburst back and sides, framing the curly maple figuring on the back and light flame maple extending along the neck profile. There is some strap wear into the clear coat of the nitro gloss on the upper bout on the back, extending to the side of the body on the upper bout as well. Wear is otherwise limited to a few minor dings and scuffs on the body. A padded gigbag is included.
