The maple neck has a mammoth baseball bat U shape with huge shoulders and a gradual increase in depth as you travel up the bound Brazilian rosewood fretboard. Measuring 1.070 deep at the 1st fret and 1.217 at the 9th as the profile begins to transition into the heel, this neck is a hearty handful that chords easily in every register. The bound fretboard retains its original, virtually unplayed medium jumbo fretwire, and the frets have ample height and crown.
The scale length is just shy of 26", and the carved bone nut measures 1 5/8" in width. The headstock is easily one of the best features of this instrument with an overlay that looks like a medieval crest, with gold "Silvertone" script etched at the top. This is no mere veneer, and there is depth to the design, which is immaculate and features vibrant colors and a tortoise backing. The original Kluson Deluxe single-line strip tuners are intact and turn smoothly with the original white buttons.
The hardware includes the original nickel trapeze tailpiece which has light surface patina, and the bridge is a proper rosewood replacement with a compensated saddle for optimal intonation. The original raised pickguard and bracket are intact too, and the guard has an identical shield graphic to the headstock, with gold pinstriping.Cosmetically, this guitar boasts its original nitro lacquer finish, described in the original catalog as "mahogany, " and in reality a vibrant grayish two-tone Sunburst which highlights the ripples of curly maple figuring on the sides and back. The finish shows faint vertical lacquer checking, light strum wear across the pick path, and a few minor finish scratches and marks on the back. Overall, this is an impressively clean example of one of Kay's finest archtops of the 1950s. The original brown alligator tolex hardshell case is included.
This heavy duty vintage case features the original latches and brown leather handle, with only minor wear on the lower bout edge.
